Waymo is a useful symbol because autonomy has spent years teaching the industry humility at highway speed. The gap between “the model can drive” and “the company can profitably operate robotaxis across varied cities” is a gilded canyon. If that canyon is narrowing because hardware is getting cheaper and systems are becoming more robust, then the real story is not a single breakthrough. It is compounding competence, the least viral and most consequential kind.
And Sam Altman’s gentler singularity thesis may be the same pattern applied to intelligence itself. The age of AI may arrive not as one divine flash, but as thousands of workflow reviews, product launches, policy fights, cost reductions, and small humiliations for humans who thought their calendar management was a sacred art.
